Hepburn Library of Madrid celebrates centennial with Ribbon Cutting and Open house Invitation to event

The Hepburn Library of Madrid is celebrating its centennial in 2017. On February 13, 1917, voters in the town of Madrid accepted the gift of a free public library donated by A. Barton Hepburn.  A. Barton Hepburn, born July 24, 1846, in Colton, NY was a nationally prominent banker, financial advisor, and philanthropist.  As he had a deep appreciation for education, this ‘Son of the North Country” wanted to erect public libraries in each of the seven towns over which he had once served as School Commissioner.  The libraries were designed to be a gathering place for social events to be used without charge and meant to stimulate use of the library.  He selected the site (central location), style of architecture (a Dutch design), the architects (Rossiter& Muller of New York City), the builder and contractor (C. E. Castle of Ogdensburg), and donated the first 300 books

Thanks to New York State legislators, the library has been able to apply and receive several grants for renovations.  Also, it has recently received a grant from Senator Pattie Ritchie  for $50,000.  This grant will be applied toward purchasing and installing an ADA compliant lift. The Staff, Board of Trustees and Friends of the Hepburn Library of Madrid, invite you to visit Mr. Hepburn’s ‘ornament to the town’ in which it stands, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary of serving our community.  Please join us for our Open House on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2:00.  There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, music, and refreshments

Come see all of the recent renovations and enjoy live music from Madrid’s very own Josh Barkley, give aways and enjoy our ongoing Friends of the Library Booksale and more on June 3rd at 2pm.

The Library will also be debuting its 100 year Anniversary Cookbook compiled with recipes tried and true by Madrid residents. The cookbook will be on sale on June 3rd, for $10 each.
